How to Mig Weld

Mig welding is a very valuable skill that can be very handy if you know how to. A mig welder is essentially a box that changes electrical energy to heat energy while melting the wire that is being forced out the end of the tip. It will also melt the metal that you are welding to. So it is perfect for joining to metal composites together to become one. Welding is very strong which can be vital for some of the machinery it is used on.

Adjusting The Settings

First thing you want to do it turn your mig welder on and click the preferred power and wire settings. If you want to weld something thin like the body metal on a car you will need a very light heat setting but if you are welding something that is centimeters thick you will need it on a high wire and power setting.

Preparation

So now you get the piece of metals you want to weld together and position them were you want them remember though once they are welded it will be almost impossible to pull the metals apart. It is a good idea to clamp down your work because the heat that is made from the welder can be enough with a slight nudge to bend your metal.

Next grab the welding gun this is the thing that the wire comes out of when you pull the trigger and position the wire about 1 cm out of the gun and then have the tip 1mm from the piece of metal. You now want to pull on the trigger for about a second. This will make what is called a tac this is where the weld is only just strong enough to hold the metal in the rite place and if you don't like where it is you can just change it.

Welding

Now go to the top of the metal and pull the trigger and move very slowly down the piece of metal you should be left with a nice smooth weld that should only need a bit of cleaning up using an angle grinder. If the weld is not smooth then you may want to adjust you settings and also go over the weld again as it may not be very strong.

Safety

Remember to always wear a welding mask, gloves and overalls. So that you don't injure yourself while welding.
